Clifford Hanney was born in Pensford in 1890 His art training began at the Municipal School of Art,Bristol, from 1913 1914 under B/S R. J. Bush. During the First World he served in the Royal Navy. After the War he returned to his art studies at the West Marlands School of Art from 1919 to 1923 and in that year was elected an A.R.W.A. In 1930 he became a Lecturer at Cheshire County Training College, remaining there for twenty years until 1950. He was one of the founders of the New Bristol Art Club and in 1951 he became an Artist Member of the Bristol Savages, becoming its President in 1963. Clifford exhibited at the Annual Exhibition from 1951 until 1977 then aged 87. He exhibited at the RA, R.B.A., R.O.I. and the R.W.A. examples of his work have also featured in the Manchester and at the Oldham Art Galleries
