John MacLauchlan Milne 1886-1957 ARSA 1933, RSA 1937
Born Edinburgh the son of artist Joe (joseph) Milne 1861-1911. Studied at ECA and lived at Kingoodie near Dundee until the outbreak of the first world war. Served in the RFC and returned briefly to Dundee before going to Paris where is painted a series of street scenes. Also worked in the South of France with his French wife at Lavardin and benefited from a stipend paid by the Dundee marmalade manufacturer Keillers, who took up a proportion of his work. Often stayed as Cassis at the same time as Cadell, Peploe, and Duncan Grant. On the outbreak of the Second World War he returned to Scotland and settled on Arran. He painted in a light and broad manner reflecting the influence of The Colourists and Van Gough, especially in his flower paintings.
