Samuel Bough 1822-1878, ARSA 1856 RSA 1875 RSW 1878
Bough was an English born artist who spent much of his life living and working in Scotland, he was a self taught artist who started his career as a scene painter in the theatres of Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh. He was encouraged by the artist Daniel Macnee to take up landscape painting he moved to Hamilton before eventually settling to live in Edinburgh.
Bough was one of the most important water-colourists of his generation, works by Bough have been exhibited in prestigious galleries worldwide including the Tate and The Royal Scottish Academy.
