Alexander Goudie RGI 1933- 2004
Born Paisley and studied at the Glasgow School of Art where he was awarded the Newberry medal. Influenced by the teaching of David Donaldson and carries on a portrait painting practice in the Glasgow tradition stretching back to Lavery. As a portraitist his sitters included Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Lord Chancellor Lord Mackay of Clashfern, Billy Connolly and a host of other figures. Goudie lived and worked in Glasgow and painted in the main landscapes and harbour scenes, a post graduate scholarship enabled him to pay regular visits to Brittany to where he returned every year for three decades as a result his works also depicted scenes in Brittany.
Works by Goudie have been exhibited widely, He was elected a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1970. A retrospective exhibition was held at the Fine Art Society in 1983. Goudie has been the subject of a television documentary in the past.
