Captain George Drummond-Fish, (fl 1906-1938)

Portrait and landscape painter who exhibited from 1906-1938 . He studied at Liverpool School of Art and won a travelling scholarship which took him to Paris, Brussels and Antwerp. Many of his works depict accurate watercolours of scenery from the west coast.

George Drummond Fish saw service with the 6th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles at Gallipoli during WW1, as part of the 29th Brigade of the 10th (Irish) Division. There he produced numerous military paintings and sketches of the bleak landscape of the Gallipoli peninsula, including eight watercolour sketches that were used to illustrate Henry Hanna’s book ”The Pals at Suvla Bay”, which recorded the exploits of the Irish Rugby Football Union volunteers of ”D” Company of the 7th Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers during the Gallipoli campaign. Three of Drummond-Fish’s watercolours were also used to illustrate Bryan Cooper’s ”The 10th (Irish) Division at Gallipoli”.

Watercolours of Gallipoli by Drummond-Fish are also held by the National Army Museum, London, and the Royal Irish Regiment, Ballymena. In the post-war years, Drummond-Fish painted extensively in Ireland, Wales and Scotland, specialising in remote moorland and coastal scenes which, with their rugged terrain, perhaps provided a haunting reminder of the Gallipoli landscape which he had painted during the campaign of 1915.

Works have been exhibited by Drummond Fish in the following galleries, the Walker gallery (1 piece), Royal Cambrian Acaademy (3 pieces), Royal Hibernian Acaademy of Art (12 pieces), Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour (1 piece) and Walker’s Gallery, London (468 pieces).
