Francis C.B Cadell RSA, RSW, (1883-1937)

Francis Cadell was born and educated in Edinburgh, Cadell completed his studies at the Académie Julian in Paris. He was the youngest of the Scottish Colourists and was the only one to fight in World War One. After demobilisation in 1919, he returned to Edinburgh.

Cadell’s was a close associate and friend of Peploe and with whom he painted at Iona during the summer months, during Cadell’s later years he suffered poor health and financial problems Peploe is known to have supported him during this time.

Cadell was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1935 and the Royal Scottish Academy in 1936. He died in Edinburgh in 1937.
