John Wheatley 1892–1955 

Painter of portraits and genre, draughtsman, etcher and teacher. Born 23 January 1892 at Abergavenny, son of Sir Zachariah Wheatley. Studied under Stanhope Forbes, Sickert and at the Slade School 1912–13. Married the artist Grace Wolfe (q.v. Grace Wheatley) in 1912. Member of the N.E.A.C. 1917. Served in the Artists’ Rifles and as Official War Artist 1918–20. Taught at the Slade School 1920–5. First exhibition (with Muirhead Bone) at the Grosvenor Galleries 1922. Michaelis Professor of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, 1925–37, and Director of the National Gallery of South Africa. Director of the Sheffield City Art Galleries 1938–47. Commissioned to paint war portraits 1941–2. A.R.A. 1945; R.W.S. 1947. Curator of the National Gallery of British Sports and Pastimes 1948–50. Died 17 November 1955 in London.
